You have an opportunity to earn Extra Credit this year by completing one, or all, of the following three assignments:
1.Read a history-related book as one of your Reader's Responses in English class. This book can be historical fiction or non-fiction, but it must be relevant to the period of time that we are studying this year (roughly 400 BCE through 1800 CE) and it MUST be pre-approved by me for credit. Turn in your completed Reader's Response form to me at least a week before the term ends to earn up to 5 extra test points.
2.Offer a written reflection on a current event that makes a connection to one
of the themes in history that we've been studying, or to an actual historical
event or person. This reflection must include a complete description of the
current event as well as a thorough analysis that traces its origins to an important
theme, development, event or person in history. Your paper must be typed,
double-spaced, at least two pages in length and contain all necessary citations, and must be turned in at least a week before the term ends. You can earn up to 20 extra test points.
3.Evaluate the contributions of important thinkers and activists of our time.
Read through the profiles of the American activists included on this site:
http://www.yesmagazine.org/people-power/portraits-of-courage-americans-who-tell-the-truth
Which ones inspire you? Of those you are most interested in, what do they have in common? Pick one to research and evaluate, and present your findings in one of the following ways:
a. a written evaluation
b. a sketchbook journal that chronicles this person's life and achievements
c. a power-point or video skit
d. a poem or rap
Whatever form your project takes, you must describe what this person did and why they did it, what impact it had and may yet have, why you chose the person you did, some connection to a person or event from history that we've studied, and what lessons their actions may hold for the rest of us. A written evaluation must be typed, double-spaced, and at least two pages in length. All must be turned in to me at least a week before grades close. You can earn up to 25 extra test points.
